Biodiesel: An Industry Poised for Growth?
نویسنده
چکیده
Development of a domestic biofuels industry that increases production of liquid biofuels from renewable resources is a priority policy objective of the United States and a number of individual states. Biofuels are expected to reduce dependence on imported petroleum with associated political and economic vulnerability, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants, and revitalize the economy by increasing demand and prices for agricultural products. Although most attention focuses on ethanol, interest in biodiesel is also increasing. Biodiesel is primarily produced from soybeans. However, other oilseed crops offer potential, especially in arid western regions of the US. The purpose of this article is to compare the physical properties of biodiesel with existing petrodiesel, review key demand factors and other policies that are stimulating increased interest in biodiesel, and summarize the present economics of its production and marketing. Although both federal and state policy outlooks remain favorable, and much optimism exists among agricultural groups, present costs of producing biodiesel exceed petrodiesel by $0.20-0.50/gal.

Economically viable algae based oil industry will depend on the high lipid content of microalgal strains. In this paper, native isolate of Nanochloropsis gaditana proved that, it is a promising strain for large scale production of biomass and biodiesel. Not all algal oils are adequate for making biodiesel, but suitable oils commonly occur. In this study, the algal growth rate, biomass productio...
متن کاملGlycerol (Byproduct of Biodiesel Production) as a Source for Fuels and Chemicals – Mini Review
Currently the large surplus of glycerol formed as a by-product during the production of biodiesel offered an abundant and low cost feedstock. Researchers showed a surge of interest in using glycerol as renewable feedstock to produce functional chemicals. This Minireview focuses on recent developments in the conversion of glycerol into valueadded products, including citric acid, lactic acid, 1,3...
متن کاملBiodiesel Exhaust: The Need for Health Effects Research
BACKGROUND Biodiesel is a diesel fuel alternative that has shown potential of becoming a commercially accepted part of the United States' energy infrastructure. In November 2004, the signing of the Jobs Creation Bill HR 4520 marked an important turning point for the future production of biodiesel in the United States because it offers a federal excise tax credit. By the end of 2005, industry pr...
